Pilgrimage Walk to Carfin Grotto
Next Saturday, 1st October - Feast of St Thérèse of Lisieux - is our Parish Pilgrimage Walk from St Gerard's Church to Carfin Grotto. It is hoped that a good number of people, especially young families, will come along and join us for this initiative for the Year of Mercy.
Our Pilgrimage will begin with Holy Mass for the Feast of St Thérèse of Lisieux (The Little Flower) at 9.30am in St Gerard's Church. We will then leave shortly after Mass - approx just after 10.00am - and walk from Bellshill to Carfin Grotto. At the end of the walk there will be a short service at the Grotto beginning at 12.30pm.
The walk is approx 4 miles (1hr 20mins). The walk is fairly flat and easy with good pedestrian footpaths and crossings the whole way. We do however advise that only those who are physically fit enough should take part in the walk. Also, children are very welcome to join however must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Those taking part are advised to wear sensible footwear and weather appropriate clothing.
The route we will be taken will go from St Gerard's Church, along Hattonrigg Road then Remma Road & Bairdlands View to Mossend Main Street. Along the Main Street onto Calder Road, passing Holy Family Church, then onto Clydesdale Road and into New Stevenston. The walk will go along Carfin Street until Tesco/Lidl area where we will cut onto New Stevenston Road taking us to Newarthill Rd and then arriving at the Grotto.
For those who cannot walk
As this event has been organised for the Year of Mercy, we want everyone to be able to take part. Those who are unable to walk are therefore still invited to take part in the event by joining us for Holy Mass before hand at 9.30am in St Gerard's Church and also joining us at Carfin Grotto for the Service which will begin at 12.30pm.
We anticipate that pilgrims should arrive at the Grotto by around 11.30am which will mean there will be time for a short comfort break to use the toilets, have a rest, get a cup of tea, visit the shrines etc.
At 12.30pm we will begin our Rosary Procession which will go around the Grotto and end with the Veneration of the relic of St Thérèse of Lisieux (The Little Flower) the co-patron of the Grotto. There will also be an opportunity to pass through the Holy Door for the Year of Mercy in St Francis Xavier's Church. It is hoped that a good number of parishioners, even if they cannot take part in the walk, will join us at the Grotto for this Procession.
Afterwards & Getting Home
The Procession will end around 1.00pm and bring to close our Pilgrimage. After this time pilgrims will then be free to further explore the Grotto and visit the beautiful Chapels and Shrines.
It will be pilgrims own responsibility to organise getting home. The train station is located just two minutes along from the Grotto and there is an hourly train from Carfin to Bellshill. Visit www.scotrail.co.uk for more info. Pilgrims may also decide to car share or to even walk back to Bellshill.
Please do make every effort to join us and to take part in this pilgrimage event. Sign up sheets are available at the back of both St Gerard's & Sacred Heart Churches or you can join our Facebook event here. Even if you haven't signed up though you can still join us on the day!
